Wintering: Rest & Retreat

This weekend, we’re bracing for winter storms. Here in the Midwest, the days can vary widely. Sixty degrees one day and below freezing the next.

I’m no stranger to Winter - both in seasons of life and seasons of the year - and it’s not uncommon for both emotional and perennial seasons to overlap. So, I’ve learned (maybe it’s more fair to say “I’m still learning”) how to listen and notice when to stop and take care of myself.

On a recent podcast from The On Being Project, host Krista Tippett interviewed author Katherine May on her new book “Wintering: The Power of Rest & Retreat in Difficult Times”. Throughout this episode, they talk about grief, loss, change, seasons, rest… so so so much. In the last few moments of the podcast Katherine shares lines from her book (I’ve linked the audio here) and this idea of rest and tending to my needs began to resonate with new frequency.

Katherine’s words gave voice to what has felt so familiar to me for much of my life and through many, many seasons. Katherine helped me feel seen & understood and my hope in sharing with you, is that it does the same for you or someone you love.
